Three-Part Field Sobriety Test
Once police officers pull you over on suspicion of drunk driving, they
will likely conduct a three-part field sobriety test. They note how you
respond to these tests since the results can be used as evidence against
you should you be charged with a DUI. The basic roadside sobriety test includes:
Walk and Turn. In this test, you must walk heel-to-toe for nine steps in a straight line.
Then, you must turn on one of your feet and repeat the nine steps back
to where you started.
One-Leg Stand. This part of the test includes standing on one foot for approximately
30 seconds. If you have difficulty maintaining your balance, police may
take that as evidence of your intoxication.
Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus. Named for the way the eye jumps involuntarily when an individual looks
to the side, this test usually includes following the police officer's
finger or an object with your eyes from side to side. If your eyes jump
more than normal, police may deem that as further proof of a high blood
Choose a Bowling Green DUI Defense Lawyer You Can Trust
While field sobriety tests can help authorities determine whether an individual
is intoxicated, they are not foolproof. Police do not always administer
them correctly, and the results are easily skewed by other medical conditions
that may be present. Regardless of how complex your case may be, our Bowling
Green attorneys are prepared to handle it skillfully and effectively.
